Breaking bad news is an integral part of a doctor's role. Doing this sensitively is an important skill and can have lasting effects on the recipient, positive or otherwise. Doing it badly makes a difficult situation worse; doing it well can not make the situation better, but it avoids the recipient being left with additional painful memories.
