It is crucial that trainees have a good understanding of suture, in order to choose the correct one for any surgical situation. In order to do this they must appreciate why different suture materials are needed in different settings, and be able to correctly select an appropriate suture material and size for different surgical procedures.
This tutorial will explain the different needles, suture sizes and materials available. They will explain which ones are commonly used in obstetric and gynaecological surgery. Finally they will show how all this information is demonstrated on the suture packaging.
This chapter should be complemented by spending time in gynaecological theatre paying particular attention to which suture is being used for different parts of different operations. Discussing the choice with the surgeon or scrub nurse will help improve understanding further.
When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:
- the different needles available
- how sutures are sized
- different suture materials, and when each type are used in obstetric and gynaecology surgery.
