It is crucial for trainees to learn names and functions of basic surgical instruments; currently, there are very few courses that formally teach the names and indications of these eponymous instruments.
This tutorial will attempt to categorise these instruments according to their use with a description of their properties. A short assessment will follow to incorporate instruments that are not otherwise categorised.
Finally, there are video clips of operations, where the trainee is asked to select the instrument being used from a list. This chapter should be complemented by spending some time with an experienced (and patient) senior scrub nurse revising the names and functions of the instruments described in the tutorial.
The instruments included in the tutorial are neither exhaustive nor exclusive, and you will have a practical session during the BPS course to strengthen your knowledge.
To facilitate learning, we have divided basic instruments into the following categories:
- tissue-holding forceps
- haemostatic clamps/forceps
When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:
- know the names of commonly used basic surgical instruments
- understand the function of these instruments
- recognise the use of these instruments in some common surgical procedures.
