Electrodiathermy is the use of high frequency electric current to produce heat which then either cuts tissue or causes coagulation. It is an extremely useful but potent tool which is utilised in laparoscopic, open, vaginal and colposcopic procedures. It is crucial for trainees to have practical knowledge of electrosurgery and to be familiar with its application and potential misuse. This tutorial comprises of an online presentation with a voiceover, followed by assessment questions to test your knowledge.
When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:
- understand the effect of electricity on tissue
- have knowledge of monopolar and bipolar circuits
- understand the connection between the generator, diathermy equipment and patient
- be aware of safe practices when using electrosurgery
